Environmental Science / Geology Field Camp in India 2011

Environmental Science / Geology Field Camp in India 2011

3 credits / 3 weeks -- Application Deadline is February 1, 2011 - Dates: May 23 - June 9

GEOL 412/512 is an environmental science / geology field course that provides students and participants with an intense three-week training in coastal ecological issues including mangrove ecology, coastal biogeochemistry, water quality, integrated with hard rock geology and a comparative site visit to tsunami-impacted and unimpacted coastal ecosystems.
The course has been designed to enhance education and training for undergraduate and graduate students in ecological, environmental, and geological science students as well as environmental and civil engineering disciplines. Most environmental field problems are interdisciplinary with strong interactions between biological, geological and anthropogenic processes. A multi-cultural experience as US students will work along side students and researchers from premier Indian research institutions.
This course will introduce participants to current field and laboratory methods that are utilized to delineate, define, and characterize environmental field problems.
During the course, the following topics will be explored:
* Introduction to coastal ecology, water quality and nutrient cycling, environmental geology and geochemistry, earth structure, geologic maps and sections. * Field experience related to problem definition, sampling protocol, and sample acquisition * Hands-on experience in field sampling techniques for soils and water. * Hands on experience in quality control and sample preparation in the lab. * Experience in data analysis and report writing.
* Grades will be based on successful completion and presentation of assigned group projects.
Activities in this camp will focus on mangrove / coastal zone ecology -1st week,
water quality and biogeochemistry -2nd week and
on geology and geochemistry – 3rd week.
Pending security clearance and availability of research vessel we may offer a 1 week research cruise on a state-of-the-art research vessel to investigate oceanic processes. Location: The beautiful Andaman Islands, India and a major port city Chennai on the mainland.
Registration fee: $4,350.00 (includes all tuition and fees, transportation from Chennai, room and board). Deposit of $400.00 must be received by or before March 15, 20
